Volunteers oppurtunities with Go Active

Visibility has been providing services throughout communities in the West of Scotland for 150 years. The organisation exists to improve the quality of life for people with a visual impairment and is focussed on supporting individuals to focus on their abilities and maintain their independence.

The Go Active Project provides support for people affected by sight loss to access and participate in community based social and recreational activities and is participant led.

Many activities are already available locally and the Go Active Project will endeavour to link participants to these activities. Time limited support will be offered to provide participants with a volunteer who can assist small groups or individuals with building relationships, introductions, engagement, confidence building & sighted guiding, until the participant(s) is established within their chosen activity.

We anticipate providing support to individuals for an agreed period of time likely to be approximately eight weeks, and reviewing thereafter. Support may be longer or shorter depending on the participants needs.

Some activities participants may require support with include:

  • Leisure Classes
  • Local Social Groups
  • College Courses (part time or vocational)
  • Walking or fitness Group
  • Library
  • Sports classes and clubs

We are currently recruiting volunteers to provide support to individuals and or groups residing within the East and West Dunbartonshire area and North & East Ayrshire.

Volunteers come from all walks of life and you do not need to have experience to participate.  We will give you visual impairment, induction and other relevant ongoing training to ensure you understand how best to support people.

Some of the tasks Volunteers will be involved with include:

  • Support individuals (1:1) or in small groups to participate in activities. This may be through sighted guiding, describing environments, orientating people with their surroundings
  • Facilitate introductions, if & when required
  • Encourage independence
  • Provide encouragement and support to all participants
  • Join in with activities as required
  • Resource local services or activities available

Activities may take place anytime during the week,  day or evenings, and at weekends and you can volunteer for as many activities as suits your own personal circumstances.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Rosemary Cameron, Go Active Co-ordinator on 0141-332-4632.
