Become a Board Member
Visibility has a board of volunteer directors and we always welcome hearing from people who are interested in joining our board. The Board's main responsibility is governance - to ensure the organisation is run efficiently and funds are spent prudently, making the very best of the resources available.
At least one third of the Board's members are visually impaired, ensuring appropriate understanding and involvement of the community it serves. Part of the Board's success is having access to fresh faces and new skills.
Some of our most recently appointed directors have told us why they joined Visibility:
I spent all my working life in various hospital posts working with people with eye disorders and have always been aware that diagnosis and treatment is often only the beginning of the person's worries about how their way of life will be affected. In particular some people feel that their family and friends regard them differently than before and they become isolated from normal activities. When I was asked to become a member of the Board I remembered people, I have dealt with ,who were so impressed by the support received from Visibility, which entirely changed their attitude to their difficulties.
Liz McClure has recently retired from hospital eye services and is currently working for the College of Optometrists as a post graduate assessor.
Before I retired from business I already had a long association with Visibility whom I advised concerning investment matters. The high degree of commitment and professionalism came through to me in the first meetings I attended. I also like the clearly defined goals and objectives. There is an excellent team spirit and the friendliness and warm atmosphere at the meetings is very noticeable.
Jim Morris retired stock broker.
I have been totally blind for the last 15 or so years and spend a lot of my time acting as secretary for several social/recreational groups for visually impaired people, including both the Renfrew Social Club and Renfrewshire Blind Bowling Club. I am also involved with ORB which organizes group events for the social/recreational groups within Glasgow and the west of Scotland. In 2005 I was appointed as Secretary for the Scottish Association for Blind Bowlers. Outwith these commitments I am a guide dog owner and amongst other things, enjoy swimming and creative writing.
