Listening and responding to people affected by sight loss in the west of Scotland

150th Anniversary Appeal

We are very proud to be celebrating our 150th birthday this year, an anniversary almost unique for a charity in Scotland .  We are sure that the group of Victorian philanthropists who set up the ‘Society for promoting Reading Among the Blind’ in 1859 would be delighted to see how we have grown to help so many people while staying true to their original values of promoting independence and freedom of choice for people with sight loss.

Visibility 150th Birthday Appeal

We want to celebrate our birthday by reaching even more children with sight loss and their families.  We are launching a 150th Birthday Appeal to raise £50,000 to create a Children and Families Service.

The world of a developing child is a very visual one and if that child has a visual impairment, they face many challenges to their development of self-awareness, self-esteem and confidence. Sometimes well meaning and loving families and teachers are unaware that their approach to caring for and protecting their child can actually be hindering the child’s development.

On the other hand, with the right support of all those around them, a visually impaired child can fully develop the skills and confidence necessary to enjoy a happy, confident and independent life. No child wants to feel different, always standing out from the crowd, but this can be the reality for many visually impaired youngsters.  With your help we can change that.

Our Children and Families Service would enable visually impaired children and parents to come together and share advice, support, concerns and frustrations.  We would work with the children, their families, teachers, classmates and communities to increase their knowledge and understanding of the world of the visually impaired child and how best to support that child.

Can you help?  Any donation you make, no matter the size, will help us reach our target and what better way to celebrate our 150th year than to change the lives of visually impaired children now and in the years to come?

If you are able to help, please make your cheque/postal order payable to Visibility and send your donation to:

For people like Catherine, losing their sight means having to re-learn things like making a cup of tea without getting burned.
